korea : travel day

anyone else have trouble sleeping the night before a big flight? i’m not sure what it is: anxiety? anticipation? regardless – after a couple hours of sleep last night, i woke up, showered, finished packing and decided to check the green space behind the hotel out during the daylight. with three flights and a couple of decent layovers coming up, i figured stretching my legs would be a good idea.

i wasn’t sure what the sunday morning crowd at jeju airport would be like, so i left with quite a bit of time before boarding. the airport was busy but smooth – korean airports are some of the best flowing airports i’ve been to. after a breakfast of warm, fresh (so good!) kimchi tuna onigiri, it was off to gimpo. oh! and that $10 upgrade to bulkhead – so worth it!

gimpo to incheon proved to take longer than anticipated. i landed with 3 hours until my flight out of incheon, but bags at gimpo took awhile to come in and then the subway is quite a walk away. a note for anyone else using the subway for the connection – there is a terminus on at least one of the AREX all stop trains which required everyone to get off and wait for the next train. over all, it took a little over an hour from gimpo to incheon, when the apps peg it at more like 25 minutes.

incheon is massive but amazing. super clean, it has a k-pop stage with weekly concerts, a traditional music stage with daily concerts, a museum of korean culture, art centers to do traditional crafts more duty free shops than i’ve seen anywhere! also, the restaurants prior to security are amazing. after security it’s a little more “food court” and take away food, but the sit down restaurants in the main hall are fantastic.

after a ridiculously cramped flight over, i upgraded to an exit row seat for the flight home and it was worth every penny! also, i spent my last won on a treat for the plane – strawberry cake! can’t think of a better way to end my trip!

until the next adventure, wigglebird… and yes, i’m already planning for next year!
